SJCDC was founded in 1985 by Rev. Henry Nevin, and a group of concern= ed and dedicated residents from the Overtown community. SJCDC was establish= ed to respond to the physical deterioration and social distress of Overtown= , Miami-Dade County’s poorest community, and to take a lead role in i= ts revitalization.

Overtown is a special c= ommunity with an illustrious history. Nestled between burgeoning Downtown M= iami and the hot Omni/Uptown/Wynwood & Miami River  areas, it is one of the oldest communities in Mia= mi dating back to 1890.  For y= ears, it was a vibrant community with successful businesses, schools, churc= hes and homeowners. Many factors caused its decline. To this end, SJCDC eff= orts are directed towards building partnerships, building new homes, rehabi= litating housing units, strengthening the economic base and improving the q= uality of life. SJCDC is committed to making a difference.  Overtown is now the hottest

There is an exciting n= ew story in Overtown which shows how one developer is fighting gentrificati= on.  St. John Community Develo= pment Corporation (SJCDC), a provider of affordable housing for low income = residents of Miami-Dade County, has completed the renovation of a two-story= apartment building located on the corner of 1445 N.W 1st Court in Overtown, a = City of Miami community targeted for urban revitalization.

For years, the two-sto= ry and 10-unit apartment building  was a picture of neglect and decay, and a blemish to Overtown’s = history and pride.  Residents = of the deteriorating structure were living in conditions near uninhabitable= .

In accordance with par= t  of its mission, “to e= nergize the vitality and positive image of Overtown….through partners= hips that build  and rehabilit= ate housing,... and enhance the quality of life”,  SJCDC began the rehab process with the= ir own dollars and a grant from Miami-Dade Empowerment Trust, and with the = support of the Miami Dade Housing Agency, the Knight Foundation, and Local = Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).&nb= sp; The building was donated to SJCDC in 2000 and architectural plan= s were completed for major renovation by Judson & Partners,  Architects.
